The Rock of Jericho

ChrisJericho.jpg Chris Jericho

I am writing this blog to honor one of one best friends, Chris Jericho. Chris and I met when he first started doing wrestling tours for Tony Condello in Northern, Manitoba. We have been close friends ever since. I have always enjoyed working with Chris and wrestling against him.

Chris is one of the most talented wrestlers in the business. He has won 30 championships between the WWF/WWE, WCW, and ECW. Chris was also the first-ever Undisputed Champion within the WWF, having unified the WWF Championship and the World Championship in 2001.

I do hope that you enjoy reading about all of Chris’ accomplishments in the WWF/WWE and reliving some very memorable moments in his career.

Nine Intercontinental Championships

Chris Jericho vs. Chyna

December 12, 1999 - January 3, 2000

Sunrise, FL

Chris won his first Intercontinental title by defeating Chyna at Armageddon. Yes, you read this correctly. I did say Chyna. Chyna was the first female ever to hold the Intercontinental title. She had won the title from Jeff Jarrett at a Good House Keeping match in Cleveland, Ohio on October 17, 1999. After hearing Jeff Jarrett make sexist comments for weeks, Chyna hit him with a guitar to take the gold. Chris defeated Chyna by putting the Walls of Jericho on her and making her tap out. Not a bad way to win your first Intercontinental title.

Chris Jericho vs. Chyna and Hardcore Holly

January 23, 2000 - February 27, 2000

New York, N.Y.

Chris and Chyna were co- Intercontinental champions at this time. In order to find out whom the undisputed Intercontinental Champion was, Chris and Chyna put their belts on the line in a Triple Threat Match against one another and Hardcore Holly. Chyna was able to hit Hardcore Holly over the head with a chair and tried to make him submit using her own version of the Walls of Jericho. However, Chris put the Lionsault on Chyna and got the win to become the Undisputed Intercontinental Champion.

Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit

May 4, 2000 - May 8, 2000

Richmond, VA

Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit started a rivalry that began at WrestleMania 2000. It continued as Benoit successfully defended the title against Jericho at Backlash and Judgment Day. However, Jericho would get his revenge in this match. Benoit and Jericho exchanged blows throughout the match.Toward the end of the match, Benoit suplexed Jericho over the ropes to the floor. The referee, Earl Hebner, tried to keep Benoit from going out to the floor. However, Benoit argued with Hebner before shoving him. Benoit then shoved Hebner through the ropes while Jericho brought the IC belt in the ring and hit Benoit with it. Jericho then connected with the Lionsault to earn the win and his third Intercontinental Title.

Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit

January 21, 2001 - April 5, 2001

New Orleans, LA

This match was a ladder match. Both men inflicted a lot of pain onto one another during the entire match. At the end, when Benoit started to climb the ladder, Jericho hit him with several chairs. This caused Benoit to fall off the ladder and tumble to the outside of the ring. Jericho once again seized the moment and climbed the ladder to win his fourth Intercontinental Championship.

Chris Jericho vs. Rob Van Dam

September 16, 2002 - September 30, 2002

Denver, Colorado

This match took place just six days before RVD would fight Triple H at Unforgiven for the World Heavy Weight title. Jericho seemed to have a good time getting the crowd upset by insulting the Denver Bronco fans. Of course, he was booed very loudly! LOL!  When the match began, Jericho busted open RVD’s mouth. RVD returned the favor by giving Jericho some shots to the face. Toward the end of the match, Triple H came to ringside. He and RVD were involved in a feud.  RVD of course went after Triple H. After RVD hit Triple H, they both fell out of the ring. When RVD returned to the ring, Jericho put The Walls of Jericho on him. Thanks to Triple H, Jericho captured his fifth Intercontinental Championship. This was Chris’ first Intercontinental reign in a year and a half. However, the reign was short as Jericho lost the belt to Kane fourteen days later.

Chris Jericho vs. Rob Van Dam

Fayetteville, North Carolina

October 27, 2003- October 27, 2003

This match took place On Monday Night RAW. Rob Van Dam said that he wanted to teach Jericho a lesson in this match and he sure did!  Eric Bischoff gave Jericho a shot at Van Dam's Intercontinental Championship. Jericho trapped RVD in the Walls of Jericho However, RVD was nearing the ropes. Just before he was able to grab the ropes, Eric Bischoff distracted the referee and Jericho pulled RVD to the center of the ring. Before the referee made him break the hold, RVD tapped out. This gave Jericho his sixth Interecontinental Championship. However, Jericho’s sixth Intercontinental championship reign would be short lived due to Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Stone Cold came out and stopped Jericho’s victory celebration. He ordered that Jericho's first title defense would be in a steel cage match against RVD and it would happen immediately. Stone Cold also banned everyone from ringside. Jericho tried climbing out of the cage twice but RVD caught him both times. Then, RVD began climbing out of the cage while Jericho was heading for the door. RVD got to the floor first and slammed the cage door into Jericho's head. Chris lost the title on the same night that he won it.

Chris Jericho vs. Christian

Portland Oregon

September 12, 2004 - October 19, 2004

Christian and Jericho began their rivalry on August 30, when Christian returned to RAW after being injured. He attacked Chris Jericho in the middle of the ring during an interview segment. The next week, Christian came down during Tyson Tomko's match with Jericho and hit him with a ladder. The two met at Unforgiven in a Ladder Match to determine the new Intercontinental Champion. In the end, Jericho hit a Facebuster off the ladder, allowing him to climb back up the ladder and grab the belt for his record seventh Intercontinental Championship.

Chris Jericho vs. Jeff Hardy

Milwaukee

March 10, 2008- June 29, 2008

This was a very physical match. At the beginning of the match both Chris and Jeff were fighting outside of the ring.  Chris banged Jeff’s head on the announcer’s table and Jeff was out of it for a good portion of the match. However, Jeff had a lot of heart and applied A Whisper in the Wind on Chris but Chris was able to kick out of it. Jericho then tried to apply The Lionsault on Jeff but Jeff was able to kick out of that. At the end of the match, Jeff missed a Swanton Bomb and Chris put the Code Breaker on him to win his eighth Intercontinental Championship.

Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio

New Orleans

June 7, 2009 - June 28, 2009

This match was a No Holds Barred match. It took place at Extreme Rules. The match began with Chris and Rey fighting on the floor of the arena.  Jericho gained an early advantage and tried to remove Rey’s mask. As the action made its way back into the ring, Rey attempted the 619 only to have Jericho counter it with the Codebreaker.  Jericho then left the ring to get a folding chair from the corner of the ring. After further attacks with the chair, Jericho applied the Walls of Jericho on Rey. Rey managed to grab a chair in the ring and deliver one last hit to Jericho's face. Rey again tried to apply the 619. Jericho caught him and removed his mask before getting a quick cover to pin Rey and win his ninth and final Intercontinental title.

Three World Heavy Weight Championships

Chris Jericho vs. Kane

Cleveland Ohio

September 7, 2008 - October 26, 2008

The main event on Raw was a Championship Scramble for the World Heavyweight Championship. The match was originally scheduled to have World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk defending against John "Bradshaw" Layfield, Batista, Rey Mysterio, and Kane. However, due to the attack on CM Punk earlier in the night, CM Punk was unable to compete and was replaced by Chris. This information was not revealed until the final five minutes of the match, at which point Chris entered in place of CM Punk.

Batista and JBL began the match, until the first five minute interval had passed, and Kane then entered the match. Later, JBL attempted to strike Kane with a "Clothesline from Hell" but was caught by Kane. Kane then lifted JBL by the throat and “Choke slammed” him to the mat and covered him for a pinfall, becoming the interim champion. Soon after, the second five minute interval expired Rey Mysterio entered the match. The match continued for several minutes, until the final five minute interval expired and Jericho entered the match as a replacement for CM Punk, shocking everyone. Soon after Jericho's entrance, Batista performed a spinebuster on Kane, covering him for a pinfall and becoming temporary champion. Batista was left as the only man standing until Jericho returned to the ring and covered the already downed Kane, scoring a pinfall and becoming interim champion. The time limit expired soon after, and Jericho won his first World Heavyweight Championship.

Chris Jericho vs. Batista

Tampa Florida

November 4, 2008 - November 23, 2008

Chris regained the World Heavyweight Championship from Batista in a Steel Cage Match on Monday Night RAW. Jericho had lost the title eight days earlier at Cyber Sunday.

Things looked bleak for Jericho when Batista had him set up for a Batista Bomb on the top rope. However, Chris was able to snap off a piece of metal that connected the cables to the cage. He smashed Batista in the head with this piece of metal and then climbed out of the cage to win the championship. Since there are no disqualifications in a Steel Cage Match, hitting Batista with the metal object was a legal maneuver.

As amazing as this may seem, in the 40+ year history of the WWE, this is the first time that either the WWE or World Heavyweight Championship has ever changed hands in a Steel Cage Match. This is just another of the firsts that Chris Jericho, the first Unified World Champion, can add to his resume

Chris Jericho vs. The Undertaker

St. Louis Missouri

February 21, 2010 - April 2, 2010

Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Champion Undertaker vs. John Morrison vs. R-Truth vs. CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio

The match started with R-Truth battling CM Punk. Punk hit the Go to Sleep to pin Truth. Rey entered next and eliminated Punk after hitting a 'rana off the top rope onto the steel grate and then followed that with the springboard splash. Chris Jericho and John Morrison were the next two wrestlers to enter the cage. Morrison blocked a top rope 'rana by Rey and hit the Star Ship Pain to eliminate Rey. The Undertaker was the last man to enter the match. Morrison was eliminated by the Undertaker when he went for the Chuck Kick on Jericho but was grabbed by the Undertaker. Undertaker gave him a choke slam on the grate and then pinned him. Chris Jericho and Undertaker battled for a few minutes when Undertaker was about to go for the Tombstone. However, Shawn Michaels entered the ring from underneath one of the grates. He gave the Undertaker the sweet chin music and then allowed Jericho to pin the Dead Man to win the title.

One Time European Champion

Chris Jericho vs.Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle

Anaheim California

April 2, 2000 - April 3, 2000

On April 2, Jericho competed in a Triple Threat match against Chris Benoit and Angle at WrestleMania 2000. The first fall would be for the Intercontinental Championship, while the second fall was for the European Championship.

In the beginning of the first fall, all three men exchanged pin attempts.  Midway into the match, Benoit broke up a Chicken Wing submission by Angle onto Jericho. This allowed Benoit to climb to the top turnbuckle and deliver a Diving headbutt on Jericho to win the Intercontinental Championship.

During the second fall, Jericho and Benoit delivered a double powerbomb onto Angle, which led to Benoit delivering three German suplexes onto Jericho. Afterwards, Benoit attempted to deliver another diving headbutt onto Angle, however, Angle moved out of the way, resulting in Benoit hitting the ringmat. This allowed Jericho to deliver a Lionsault and win his first and only European Championship. Jericho lost the title the next day to Eddie Guerrero on Raw after Chyna, claiming she could not resist Guerrero's Latino Heat, turned heel to side with him.

One Time WWF Champion

Chris Jericho vs. Triple H

April 17, 2000

 State College Pennsylvania

On the April 17 edition of Raw, Jericho took on Triple H in an unscheduled title match. Jericho had been insulting Stephanie and Triple H wanted to shut Chris up and defend his wife Stephanie’s honor. Jericho brought The Acolytes down to ring side with him and Triple H had Stephanie and Shane in his corner. At the end of the match, Triple H knocked out the referee and Earl Hebner became the new referee. Jericho pinned Triple H with a Moonsault when referee Earl Hebner made a fast count. Hebner, later reversed the decision due to pressure from Triple H. The WWE does not recognize Jericho's reign as champion.

One Time Undisputed WWF Champion

Chris Jericho vs. The Rock

Chris Jericho vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin

December 9, 2001

SanDiego California

On December 9, at Vengeance, Jericho defeated both  The Rock for the WCW Championship and Stone Cold Steve Austin for his WWF Championship on the same night. Chris became the first wrestler to hold both championships at the same time which made him the first Undisputed WWF Champion.

Chris’ first match was against The Rock for World Heavy Weight Championship. The Rock and Chris exchanged many blows in the beginning of the match. Jericho hit a spinning heel kick and a missile dropkick. Jericho knocked The Rock's head into the steel ring steps and hit a flying back elbow. The Rock came back with a flying clothesline. Jericho applied a sleeper hold but The Rock fought out of it. Jericho then hit a one-handed bulldog and a Lionsault. The Rock tried a superplex but Jericho knocked him down and hit a flying crossbody. However, The Rock rolled through. Jericho continued attacking The Rock.

Jericho applied the Walls of Jericho but The Rock countered it into a roll-up. The Rock hit a Rock Bottom. Just then, Mr. McMahon came down to ringside. The Rock went for the pinfall but Mr. McMahon distracted the referee. The Rock hit Mr. McMahon and applied a Spinebuster on Jericho. He brought Mr. McMahon into the ring and hit Jericho with a People's Elbow. The Rock attacked Mr. McMahon and while the referee checked Mr. McMahon, Jericho hit a Rock Bottom to win the match, and the title.

The final match of the night was between Austin and Jericho. The match started when Austin speared Jericho. The two fought outside the ring and on the announcer’s table. Jericho threw Austin shoulder-first into the ringpost. Jericho then “accidently” hit the referee. Jericho also hit a low blow and a Stone Cold Stunner on Austin. Mr. McMahon came out again and ordered Nick Patrick to referee the match. However, Ric Flair interfered and pulled Patrick out of the ring and attacked him. Mr. McMahon knocked Flair into the ringpost. Austin then hit a low blow and assaulted Mr. McMahon. He applied the Walls of Jericho on Chris. Jericho tapped out but the referee was down. Booker T came out and hit Austin with the WWF Championship belt. The referee recovered and Jericho pinned Austin to win the match and became the first ever Undisputed Champion in the World Wrestling Federation.

One Time WWF Hardcore Champion

Chris Jericho vs. The Big Show

May 28, 2001 - May 28, 2001

Calgary Alberta Canada

The Hardcore Championship was one of the most unique championships in WWE. The Hardcore Champion could be pinned at any time of day, any day of the week as long as a referee was around to make the three-count.

This was a big match for Chris. He was the current Intercontinental champion and one half of The WWF Tag Team Champions. If Chris won this match, he would become The Hardcore Champion and also get the opportunity to have a WWF Championship title match against Stone Cold Steve Austin. However, Chris was at a disadvantage because he was in a TLC match the night before and his body had taken a lot of punishment.

This match would have no disqualifications. Chris and The Big show used garbage can covers, chairs, the metal steps from the ring and other any weapons that both men could find to hit one another. Big show dominated most of the match. At the end, The Big Show was going to throw the ring steps at Jericho. However, Jericho blocked him and hit the Lionsault to win his only Hardcore Championship. Chris’ reign would last only a few minutes as Rhyno came out and pinned Chris to take the gold.

Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho vs. Stone Cold and Triple H

May 21, 2001 - June 21, 2001

San Jose California

This match would be one of the biggest matches in the lives of Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho. On this night, they took on Triple H and Stone Cold for the Tag Team Championships live on Monday Night Raw. Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho were fired up at the beginning of the match. However Triple H and Stone Cold did a lot of double teaming and inflicted a great deal of pain onto Chris Benoit. Triple H tried to finish Benoit off by putting an abdominal stretch, sleeper hold and pedigree on him. When Benoit finally tagged Jericho, Jericho put The Walls of Jericho on Triple H right on the announcers’ table. When Triple H broke out of the hold, he brought a sledge hammer into the ring. Benoit was going at it with Stone Cold and Triple H accidently hit Stone Cold with the sledge Hammer. Benoit then pinned Stone Cold. Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit then became World Tag Team Champions. This match was so brutal that Triple H suffered a quad injury and was out of action for a while.

Chris Jericho and The  Rock vs. The Dudleys

October 22, 2001 - November 1, 2001

Kansas City MO

The Rock & Chris Jericho were never the best of friends in the ring. However, they decided to be tag team partners and try and capture the World Tag Team Championship from the Dudleys and The Alliance. The Dudleys had Jericho set up for a 3-D, but Y2J tackled Bubba Ray, allowing The Rock to deliver the Rock Bottom to D-Von for the pin. This would be Jericho’s second  World Tag Team Championship and the Rock’s Fifth  World Tag Team Championship.

Chris Jericho and Christian vs. Kane and The Hurricaine

October 14, 2002 - December 15, 2002

Montreal Canada

Christian and Chris Jericho teamed up to take on the World Tag Team Champions, Kane and The Hurricane on Monday Night Raw. Kane had a lot on his mind as he had just been accused of murder by Triple H. The Game stated he was responsible for the death of one of his ex-girlfriends from his past. Even with all of that on Kane's mind, he put up a good fight. The Hurricane got caught in a roll up by Chris Jericho. Jericho used the ropes for leverage and was able to get a three count to get the win. This was Jericho's third World Tag Team Championship and Christian's ninth.

Edge and Chris Jericho vs. Carlito and Primo

June 28, 2009 - July 26, 2009

Sacramento California

This match was very special to me because it was the last time in my career that I would become a World Tag Team Champion. At the Bash, in Sacramento, California, Carlito and Primo were supposed to fight Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase for the Unified Tag Team Championship belts. Teddy Long, decided to make this a Triple Threat Match and added Chris and I to the match. Being the Ultimate Opportunist, I speared Carlito and Chris and Chris and  I won the Unified Tag Team Championship. Unfortunately, on July 3, 2009 I tore my Achilles during a match with Jeff Hardy and the Big Show replaced me as Chris’partner.

Chris Jericho and Big Show vs. Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes

July 26, 2009 - December 13, 2009

Philadelphia Pennsylvania

At Night of Champions, the Big Show was announced as Jericho’s mystery partner and my replacement. The Unified WWE Tag Team titles were on the line against Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes. The Big Show, who started the match, took advantage of his size on his opponents before tagging in his partner, who was double-teamed by the challengers. The match ended when Jericho caught DiBiase with the Codebreaker, which led to The Big Show placing a Camel Clutch on Ted DiBiase, causing DiBiase to submit and allowing Chris and Show to retain the titles.

Personal life

Chris’ father, Ted Irvine, is a former National Hockey League player. Though he was born in the Long Island neighborhood of Manhasset, New York, Chris was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Chris and his wife Jessica have three children - a son named Ash Edward, who was born on September 24, 2003 and twin daughters Cheyenne Lee and Sierra Loretta who were born on July 18, 2006.

Chris has two tattoos on his left hand. The first is his wedding band while the second is the letter 'F' on the back of his hand, representing Fozzy, a band he has been lead vocalist for since 1999.

  1. First time I saw Chris he was in ECW and though he was a great Wrestler without a lot of Talent, but it was until the WCW Heel Turn/Conspiracy Victim stuff that he became one of my all times favorites. You, HBk, Ric Flair, Mr. Perfect, and Y2J are in a 5 Way Tie For First in My Mind :)
